How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Worcester County?

A cosmetic refresh runs $15,000 to $35,000, a mid-range full remodel runs $35,000 to $75,000, and a high-end remodel or one that changes the layout runs $75,000 to $130,000 or more. The single biggest cost driver is whether the layout changes, because moving plumbing, gas, and electrical costs far more than replacing what sits in the same place.

Kitchen Remodel Cost by Scope

A cosmetic refresh, $15,000 to $35,000. New countertops, backsplash, hardware, paint, and flooring, keeping the existing layout and cabinet boxes. If your boxes are solid and the layout works, this changes the room for a fraction of a full remodel. Cabinet refacing or refinishing fits here.

A mid-range full remodel, $35,000 to $75,000. New cabinets, counters, appliances, lighting, and flooring. Same footprint, everything replaced.

High-end or layout change, $75,000 to $130,000 and up. Custom cabinetry, premium appliances, and the thing that really drives it: moving walls.

What It Costs to Remove a Wall and Open Up a Kitchen

Most of the kitchens we are called about were laid out for how people cooked in 1955 or 1985. Closed off from the dining room, short on counter space, one fixture in the middle of the ceiling.

Opening that wall is the change that transforms how a house feels. It is also the change that turns a remodel into a structural project.

A load-bearing wall can come out. It needs a properly sized beam, posts to carry the load down, and a footing at the bottom capable of taking it, which on an older home frequently means work in the basement underneath the kitchen. Whatever is inside the wall has to be rerouted: plumbing stacks, HVAC ducts, electrical runs.

This is why a kitchen with a layout change needs a general contractor holding a Construction Supervisor License rather than a cabinet installer. Andrew Mercurio holds Massachusetts CSL #CS-093044.

If what you actually need is more space than the house currently has, a bump-out or a kitchen extension is sometimes the better answer than rearranging what is there. Our home additions page covers that.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Cabinetry is the largest single line item and has the widest range. Stock, semi-custom, and full custom differ by multiples. In an older Worcester County home there is a hidden factor: floors are rarely level and walls are rarely square, so cabinets here need shimming and scribing rather than simply hanging. That is labor, and it is the difference between a run of cabinets that looks built-in and one that looks installed.

Countertops run from laminate at the low end through quartz and granite in the middle to specialty stone at the top. They get templated after the cabinets are set, which is the only way to get a clean fit on walls that are not square.

Appliances are entirely a choice. The spread between a competent package and a professional-grade one can be $20,000 on its own.

Moving plumbing and gas. Same principle as a bathroom. A sink where a sink already is costs a fraction of a sink across the room.

What the demolition uncovers. In a Worcester County home built before 1960, expect some of this: knob and tube wiring, a service panel without capacity for an induction range and a dishwasher on separate circuits, cast iron waste lines, plaster over lath, and framing on irregular spacing that does not line up with modern cabinet dimensions.

Is Cabinet Refacing Cheaper Than New Cabinets?

Considerably, and it is worth asking about before committing to a full remodel.

Refacing replaces doors, drawer fronts, and veneer while keeping the existing boxes. Refinishing goes further still and simply repaints what is there. Both cost a fraction of new cabinetry and both are genuinely good options when the boxes are solid.

The catch is that neither changes the layout. If the problem with your kitchen is where things are rather than how they look, refacing will not fix it. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

How Long a Kitchen Remodel Takes

Most full kitchen remodels run four to eight weeks of construction once materials are on site. The ordering window before that is frequently longer than the build.

Custom cabinets commonly run six to twelve weeks from order to delivery. Countertops cannot be templated until the cabinets are actually set, which adds another one to three weeks after that.

We do not start demolition until the long-lead items are ordered and confirmed. A kitchen torn apart waiting on cabinets is the single most common way these projects go wrong, and it is entirely avoidable with sequencing.

Plan on losing the use of the kitchen for the duration. Most families set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere with the refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker, and we work out where that goes before demolition day.

What Should Be Included in a Kitchen Remodel Quote

Our estimate covers demolition and disposal, framing and structural work, cabinetry and installation, countertop template and install, backsplash tile, flooring, lighting, licensed electrical and plumbing, paint, finish carpentry, permits, and inspections.

Priced separately once we know it applies: electrical service upgrades, significant plumbing or gas relocation, structural work beyond what is visible, and lead-safe work practices on pre-1978 homes.

FAQ

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Worcester, MA?

A cosmetic refresh runs $15,000 to $35,000, a mid-range full remodel runs $35,000 to $75,000, and a high-end remodel or one that changes the layout runs $75,000 to $130,000 or more. The single biggest cost driver is whether the layout changes, because moving plumbing, gas, and electrical costs far more than replacing what sits in the same place.

Can you remove a wall to open up a kitchen?

Usually, but it depends on whether the wall is load bearing and what is inside it. A load-bearing wall can come out with a properly sized beam and posts carrying the load down to a footing that can take it, which on an older home often means work in the basement underneath. Plumbing stacks, HVAC ducts, and electrical runs inside the wall all have to be rerouted. This is structural work and requires a Construction Supervisor License.

Custom cabinets commonly run six to twelve weeks from order to delivery, and countertops cannot be templated until the cabinets are actually set, adding another one to three weeks. A cosmetic refresh can be done in two to three weeks.

Is it cheaper to reface cabinets than replace them?

Considerably, and it is a genuinely good option when the boxes are solid and the layout works. Refacing replaces doors, drawer fronts, and veneer while keeping the existing boxes. Refinishing goes further still and simply repaints what is there. Both cost a fraction of new cabinetry. The catch is that neither changes the layout, so if the problem with your kitchen is where things are rather than how they look, refacing will not solve it.

Can I use my kitchen during the remodel?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is setting you up for a bad few weeks. Plan on losing the kitchen for the duration. Most families set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere in the house with the refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker, and we work out where that goes before demolition starts. We also seal off the work area, because a kitchen demo generates a great deal of dust and it travels.
